The Memphis Grizzlies have officially entered a full rebuild after trading Ja Morant to the Portland Trail Blazers on June 29. Memphis will now build around a new core including Zach Edey, Cedric Coward, and Cam Boozer.
What happened?
The Grizzlies acquired Jerami Grant and Kris Murray as part of the trade for Morant. The rebuild actually kicked off with the Desmond Bane trade to Orlando after the 2024-25 season, then moved forward when Jaren Jackson Jr. was dealt to Utah during the 2025-26 season.
Why it matters for Memphis Grizzlies
Ja Morant was the last piece of that core still on the roster, though he was the subject of consistent trade rumors for months before getting traded. The Grizzlies' roster now also includes Jerami Grant and Kris Murray, the two players that came back in the Morant trade.
What comes next?
Memphis is well over the NBA roster limit of 15, and it has 18 standard-contract players on its roster. That number doesn't include second-round pick Richie Saunders. Here's a look at where the roster stands after the Morant trade.
